In recent years, technological advances in energy storage using lithium-ion batteries and energy capture through monocrystalline solar panels have significantly improved the performance and reliability of solar lighting systems. This improved energy storage has also increased lumen output of luminaires, meaning solar powered street lighting is now a viable option when considering a modern street lighting design scheme.
There is a common misconception that the British Isles do not receive enough sunlight throughout the year, particularly during winter, to make solar powered street lighting practical. We carry out solar powered lighting designs for many housing developer schemes under Section 38 & 278 requirements, where performance and compliance are critical.
We recently conducted a night-time site visit in December to assess performance, and the results were impressive. Even in winter conditions, the lumen output and reliability of the solar powered street lighting remained strong.
