The Public Realm & Amenity Lighting Design

Nightlife can be an important part of a city or town’s culture, attracting visitors to entertainment, restaurants and bars for food or drink; well-designed amenity lighting adds character to the night scene by presenting a warm ambience and feeling of security and social interaction.

Lighting Review for Planning Applications & Discharge of Conditions

A good lighting design means an outdoor lighting installation is being adequately controlled to prevent light pollution and nuisance during night-time. This could be a resident’s sleep disturbed by light shining into a bedroom window, our view of the night sky being blinded by sky glow, glare (the uncomfortable intensity brightness of a light source) and impact on nocturnal wildlife such as bats, or adversely affect fauna & flora, not to mention the potential for wasted energy and increase in carbon emissions. We work with local authority planning officers, housing developers and architects to assess and minimise potential effects of obtrusive light from outdoor lighting and ensure compliance to permissible tolerances of GN01/20 and CIE 150: 2017.

Replacement LED Street Lighting Design

In recent years we’ve been appointed as street lighting designers and consultants on three major local authority LED Street Lighting Replacement Projects, we've replaced thousands of inefficient sodium lamps with new energy saving LED luminaires that use 60% less electricity, also resulting in thousands of tonnes reduction in carbon emissions.

Subway & Tunnel Lighting Design

Lighting a tunnel or subway, particularly long structures, requires quite different lighting design techniques to road lighting. A driver entering a long tunnel must maintain a visual scene of conditions ahead when moving from daylight into a tunnel. Much higher luminances are therefore needed for the first sections of a long tunnel to allow a driver’s eyes to adjust and to cancel the ‘black-hole’ effect at a tunnel entrance. Our lighting designs for tunnels, subways and underpasses alleviate the ‘black-hole’ effect and fully compliant to British Standard BS 5489-2 and other relevant codes of practice. Our subway and underpass lighting designs are lit to appropriate daytime and night-time lux levels and contribute greatly to a pedestrian’s safety and security.

Footpath Lighting Design

It has always been important to light footpath & cycle tracks to adequate levels of illumination during night-time; good lighting assists pedestrians and cyclists by revealing obstacles and hazards ahead and increases awareness of movements or intent of others in the immediate area. However, BS5489-1 compliant lighting of cycle tracks and footpaths is now crucial given the roll out of electric bikes and e-scooters that can travel at much increased speed.
Our cycle
track and footpath lighting designs are compliant to prescribed levels of BS5489-1 to deliver good lighting onto horizontal surfaces, and excellent colour rendering whilst minimising light pollution issues such as sky glow and glare.

Car Park Lighting Design

The lighting of a car parks requires different lighting design techniques as car parks can vary considerably in terms of size, location and access. At pay stations, additional task lighting and good colour rendering is crucial to identify coinage or for making a payment card transaction. Lighting should be within the general extents of a car park to save electrical energy and for the avoidance of light pollution. Vertical illuminance is also important for car parks for facial recognition of others, personal security and purposes of CCTV recordings on site.

Solar Powered Street Lighting Design

Innovative control of LED luminaires, more efficient photovoltaic arrays and latest generation of lithium-ion batteries present much improved performance and reliability of solar powered street lighting, and many housing developers are now turning to a solar power to illuminate non-adopted areas of their housing developments. Solar Powered streetlights can be an ideal solution in these spaces and where a mains electricity supply isn’t readily available. Solar powered streetlights leave no carbon footprint and have the following cost saving benefits:
No Ongoing Electricity Costs
Quick and Economical to Install
Eliminate costs of a Mains Electricity Supply Point

No feeder Pillar, this also Reduces Street Clutter
No Excavations to Dig
No Ducts, No Supply Cables
In recent years we have designed several Solar Powered streetlighting schemes fully compliant to latest British Standards for Road Lighting BS5489-1: 2020.
