The largest-ever UK electricity grid investment, setting the stage for an "electricity superhighway," has been announced. The £3.4 billion project will span 270 miles of undersea cable, transporting energy from Scotland to Yorkshire.
Currently, energy producers are paid to halt electricity production when the grid cannot handle excess supply, but this expansion will minimise such power-down requests, saving £1.5 billion. The new infrastructure, known as Eastern Green Two, is crucial for creating a national electricity grid that efficiently moves energy from production sites, often off Scotland's coast, to densely populated areas where it's most needed.
The government aims to make Britain a clean energy superpower by 2030, which, if achieved, will reduce the UK's dependence on gas imports. This significant grid investment marks the beginning of building a future-ready energy network, essential for tackling climate change and enhancing Britain's energy independence over the next decade.
