Solar powered Street Lighting in the UK

In recent years, technological advances for storing energy in latest generation lithium-ion batteries and harvesting that energy using monocrystalline solar panels has vastly improved performance and reliability of solar lighting. This improved energy storage has also increased lumen output of luminaires meaning solar powered street lighting is these days a viable option when considering a street lighting scheme. There’s mistaken belief that the British Isles isn’t exposed to enough sunlight throughout the year, particularly during winter, to make solar powered street lighting a reality. We carry out solar powered street lighting designs for many of our housing developer clients, so we carried out a night-time visit to assess performance. Given our site visit was carried out in December, performance of the solar powered street lighting and lumen output is quite impressive.
